According to Taiwan News on August 15, the Ministry of Health of Taiwan said that the total fines for vape use in the first half of 2024 have exceeded NT$20 million (US$618,000).
The Tobacco Hazard Prevention Act, revised in March 2023, prohibits the manufacture, sale and use of all types of vape products in Taiwan. Individuals who use vapes may be fined up to NT$10,000 (US$309).
According to the Central News Agency (CNA), a survey released by the Ministry of Health showed that the rate of vape use among junior high school students has risen to 3.9%, while that among high school students has increased to 8.8%. It is estimated that about 80,000 teenagers in Taiwan are exposed to vapes.
Russell Ying, head of the department’s tobacco harm prevention team, said that more than 160,000 vape products have been inspected in 22 counties and cities in Taiwan so far this year. About 370 cases of vape import, sale or use were punished, with a total fine of more than NT$20 million (US$618,000).
Despite the revision of the Tobacco Act in 2023, illegal tobacco products are still rampant.
