In 47 low-, upper-middle, and high-income countries, the prence of vaping among adolescents was 8.6 percent, while the prence of frequent vaping was 1.7 percent, according to a published study.
Dr. Gary CK Chan from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, and colleagues examined the prence of vaping among adolescents in 47 low-, upper-middle- and high-income countries and surveyed 44 World Health Organization (WHO) National tobacco control policies for youth e-cigarette use. Data were obtained on 151,960 adolescents who participated in the WHO Global Youth Tobacco Survey between 2015 and 2018.
The researchers found that the overall weighted prence of vaping among youths in the past 30 days was 8.6 percent, and the prence of frequent vaping in the past month was 1.7 percent. As the impact varies widely across countries, the five WHO policies (surveillance, smoke-free environments, smoking cessation programmes, health warnings and advertising bans) are inconclusive about their relationship to youth vaping. Higher taxes on combustible tobacco products are associated with higher rates of youth e-cigarettes.
“The global prence of frequent vaping among young people is low,” Chen said in a statement. “However, we need comprehensive policies, such as strict enforcement of age limits, taxes, nicotine levels and advertising bans, to prevent young people from smoking.”
